GREYHOUNDS TARGETED IN ANIMAL THEFTS

An Animal Charity is warning pet owners of a series of thefts or kidnaps, aimed particularly at Greyhounds, as unscrupulous criminals snatch dogs that they then sell on to aficionados at the start of the hunting season. In recent weeks, they say there have been several attempts to steal such dogs, particularly in the streets of Alicante.

‘Alicante Adopts’ is an association dedicated to the shelter of such animals and they say they have firm evidence of a number of such attempts, the most recent in the beach area of El Campello where dogs are regularly walked and bathed dogs.

The incident occurred last week when a young woman walking with her greyhound was surprised by two men who tried to snatch it. Although she was cornered she screamed for help and the thieves sped off in a white van with a Murcia registration mark. The woman said that there was already at least one other greyhound in the van.

Just last month Janis was also approached in the Alicante neighborhood of San Blas, by two men who also attempted to snatch her greyhound, but the attackers withdrew as the girl ran into an area where there was more traffic and pedestrians.

These are just two cases, but the Civil Guard has also recently warned of the existence of organized networks which are engaged in the theft of greyhounds in different parts of Spain. Although more common in the rural areas of Andalusia and La Mancha, such attempts to kidnap the dogs are now regularly being seen in Alicante province of.

The kidnapped greyhounds are usually destined for racing hunting where the best specimens can reach prices of 1,000 euros.
