A 45 year old Romanian man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run in which a British man in his 40´s was killed, eleven years after the incident.
The incident occurred in April of 2003, in the town of Bobadilla, Málaga. The man was found in the road with multiple injuries, but as the emergency services arrived, there was nothing they could do to save the man, believed to have been knocked down by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Officers attending the incident quickly identified the victim as a British man and in his 40s who was spending a few days on holiday in Antequera with his partner.
The investigation was taken over by the National Police, with the principle hypothesis being an unintentional collision with a vehicle being the cause of death. Investigators found skid marks at the scene which matched the emergency braking of a vehicle, and fragments from a car on the man´s body.
The police conducted a reconstruction of the event, based on forensic evidence and testaments from the man´s partner, with everything indicating that the man had been out jogging along the road and was thrown after being hit by a car. The skid marks suggested that the driver lost control of the vehicle and, after running over the victim, fled.
Having concentrated on a search for the vehicle, investigators soon located it parked near an area where Romanian residents are known to live, and noted that it had suffered body damage consistent with the dynamics of the accident.
Further investigation by the Scientific Police allowed officers to identify a 45 year old Romanian, identified with the initial E.Z., but having searched the local area officers concluded that the suspect had left the area completely.
It was on the 29th of November that the suspect was identified as having landed on a flight at Málaga airport, which had come from an undisclosed European country, when border guards noted an arrest warrant in place for the man on suspicion of murder, promptly enacting an arrest.
Officers from the initial investigation believe that other people were also in the car but they have yet to identify them, but it is hoped that once processed through the judicial system, they can give some closure to the family and friends of the tragic victim.
