GRANT DENIED FOR LA ZENIA ROUNDABOUT WORK

The application for a 50,000 euro grant from the Alicante provincial government to fund the requisite work on the La Zenia roundabout has been declined, on account of the current characteristics of the road network not matching those registered in the municipal plans.

The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, explained that the problem is due to the fact that the N-332 and roundabout on the “general plan” of the municipality, is still a single lane carriageway. The plan should have been amended when the work on the N-332 road was completed, but nobody in the then government acted to do this.

A proposal was submitted to the Orihuela plenary session to amend the general plan in August, which would have also offered some protection to the residents of the Orihuela Costa who have lost their postal service, but the new development plan was rejected in a plenary session with the majority of votes of the PP and is therefore still not in the publication phase.

However, since the work on the roads at La Zenia is considered an urgent priority, and were endorsed in a plenary session, they will be financed from the funds earned from the Orihuela Costa portion of the sale of the coastal plots, as soon as the funds are released.

Meanwhile, is has also come to light that the reason that the Orihuela Costa does not have bus stops on the La Zenia roundabout route is that, unlike neighbouring municipalities, nobody from the then government of Orihuela apparently requested them when the N-332 was widened. In Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada the bus stops were constructed as part of the widening scheme and the Ministry paid the bill. Now, due to the apparent lack of action previously, the municipality will have to fund the 102,000 euro bill for these too.
