According to a statement issued last week by the Department of Health The General Hospital of Alicante has been accredited by the National Transplant Organization for conducting cross renal transplants, based on the exchange of live kidney donors between two or more partners, and as such becomes only the second hospital in the Region to perform this type of transplant.

It joins a list of twenty national hospitals which are said to perform at a level of excellence in the care of patients who require a kidney transplant.

To achieve this accreditation, the Hospital has shown compliance with all the requirements, mandated by the Spanish Ministry of Health including the successful minimum performance of fifteen living donor transplantation procedures in the three years

The aim of this type of transplant is to provide patients suffering with chronic renal failure the possibility of receiving a transplant from a living donor, even though their partner or family members are incompatible.

Surgery involves the use of less invasive surgical techniques and the study and care of the donor (before, during and after the procedure) also leading to fewer complications to the donor.

However this type of transplant still involves a complex logistical process, requiring full cooperation between the central office of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), the regional transplant coordinators, hospitals and medical teams involved in the operation.

A key aspect of the program is the National Register of donor-recipient pairs which is now produced as a software application that allows the speeding up of the possibilities of exchange between registered donors and recipients.
