A donkey kept in a yard so small she could barely move has been rescued by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

In a joint operation with Guardia Civil Seprona, Asoka animal rescue association and the Rescue Centre the donkey and some dogs were saved from appalling conditions last Thursday (February 12).

The donkey’s hooves are severely malformed and its right foreleg is twisted almost 180 degrees after years of neglect.

“Where she was kept was so small and full of rubbish that she was not able to move and her hooves have not been touched for years,” rescue centre co-founder Sue said.

“She has now been trimmed as much as possible and we will monitor her over the next few days to see how she is moving and decide what to do for the best.”

Police are now looking to prosecute the donkey’s owner. Animal welfare is becoming a much more important issue in this area and the EHCRC is increasingly being called out by the police to assist in rescues.

The rescue was complicated by ongoing problems with the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s aging trailer, which broke down early this month. Mechanics were able to temporarily repair it for the rescue, but the centre is now fundraising for a new trailer.

Contact has been made with a manufacturer that makes trailers very low to the ground and does not need a ramp as many of the horses that are rescued are very weak and traumatized and going up a noisy ramp can be very difficult for them and dangerous for us. Also the trailer can be specially modified internally to carry all sizes of horses, ponies and donkeys .

The centre welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help their cause. Every cent donated or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the 90 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre.

Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are welcome. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public for free on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The first horse tour begins at 2pm. Carrots and apples are welcome.

EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions and details on how to sponsor horses, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net
