On Sunday evening, Los Arcos Stadium was the venue for the meeting of the two most southernly teams of Division 3 (Valenciana grupo 6) with a great deal at stake for both sides.

Earlier in the season Torry had suffered a home defeat to their bitter rivals, and with both clubs pushing for an end of season play off slot, this fixture certainly had an extra edge to it.

Orihuela’s dire financial situation has been well documented, but following a bad run, they seem to have steadied the ship and are now unbeaten in their last 5 matches. Torry meanwhile, have suffered a torrid time of late, unfortunately experiencing a goal drought which has coincided with some suicidal defending, and resulted in 3 straight defeats.

For FC Torrevieja it was sad to see that all three prevailed as the two teams locked horns, their atrocious defending, goal drought and comprehensive defeat.

Despite the return of Eddie to the side there was little improvement as the visitors went into the interval three goals behind. But even after their encouraging start, with Obele hitting the post on the quarter hour mark, it quickly became evident that Orihuela were much the sharper outfit, shooting at every opportunity, and with such power. The visitors simply had no answer.

It was skipper Flecky that opened the scoring for the home side on 25 mins when his low drive gave Oscar no chance as it rebounded in off the post.

But there was a glimmer of hope for the visitors on the half hour. After Corella had been brought down on the edge of the box Cesar appeared to have levelled the scores from the free kick only to see his effort cleared off the line by Alex Garcia and then to add to their woes, just moments later, Torry’s former striker Tonino beat Cesar with a top class effort, synonymous of the strikes from his glory days with Guardamar, Torry and Cartagena.

Piko made it 3-0 just prior to the interval when he squeezed his effort inside the post from an acute angle.

The 2nd period was little better although the visitors did confine their hosts to just 2 more goals with Perico and Emilio on the scoresheet in the 52nd and 60th mins respectively. And Torry couldn’t even manage a consolation when a fine low save from Emilio kept out Adrian’s goalbound effort in the final few minutes of the game.

Whether Torry will learn from this defeat only time will tell but it now seems as though any thoughts of the end of season playoffs are nought but a distant memory.

But there is certainly a great deal of pride still to be played for starting with a 5pm ko next Sunday evening against mid table Levante ‘B’ at the Vicente Garcia. Surely this evenings game against Orihuela is the low point of the season from which it must only get better in the remaining weeks.
