The Torrevieja retailers association, APYMECO, are calling on political parties to join in a campaign that would limit the opening hours of large supermarkets, in order to give more opportunities for smaller businesses to compete for trade.
Torrevieja has been one of the worst places hit by the growth of large retail outlets, firstly with the creation of the Habaneras shopping centre, which itself then suffered after the opening of the Zenia Boulevard. Many small businesses have closed down, unable to compete with the retail monsters, which is clear by the countless vacant premises on every street of the city centre.
The group hope that by ensuring a commitment to control the opening hours of larger stores, shoppers may well return to the smaller outlets and support their local businesses more.
