Orihuela city will be joining in with the global phenomenon known as Earth Hour this year, making a gesture towards highlighting the need to raise awareness of the fragility of the planet and combat global warming.

Earth Hour began in 2007, in an initiative that saw the lights go out on the 28th of March; the event which is organised through the WWF has continued to grow ever since.

At 8:30 pm local time, wherever you are in the world, the idea is to switch off your lights, and in fact any electrical items that you can, leaving them off for the full hour.

As the wave of darkness sweeps across the globe, it highlights how over consumption of energy is leading to irreversible damage.

With key buildings around the world being plunged into darkness, for many businesses in city skyscrapers or for many government buildings, the lights are turned off at the end of the business day the Friday before Earth Hour. So Earth Hour is more of a fade-out in some ways than a black out.

This year, in Orihuela, the government has pledged to turn off the lights on the outside of the town hall, and the iglesia de las Santas Justa y Rufina.

As part of the global WWF initiative, you too can get involved, simply by switching off your lights for an hour on the 28th of March at 8:30pm, or by getting more actively involved through one of the many events and schemes around the world.
