Benalmadena Bowls Club ran its 8 day Open tournament from Saturday 21st February to Sunday 1st March. We were blessed with sunshine through the week but the very windy conditions on most days led to some difficult bowling for the 247 entrants over the four disciplines played. Unfortunately the influenza virus that is amongst us at the moment meant that a few entrants could not complete their matches.

The Tournament started with the 52 Pairs playing the knockout rounds which saw some interesting results with many of the more prominent teams having an early exit, due in some extent to the conditions no doubt! Sponsors for the Pairs competition were Steve and Gail Gilkes of Aero Bowls who also played and both made their way to the Quarter Finals. Many of the contestants were using equipment purchased from them so it was hopefully a successful venture.

Pairs winners were Tom Rogers from Lauro BC together with Terry Morgan of Belplaya who after a very long final day managed to prevail over finalists Chris Down of Superbowl and John Pearce of Belplaya. For both Tom and John this was their third match of the day so all credit to their levels of fitness and concentration. The Triples competition saw 30 teams entered for the opening matches which were played on the Monday and Tuesday down to the Semi Final stages.

Sponsors were HiFX International Payments and Black Tower Financial Management Group. There were some close fought matches all the way through with Gordan and Margaret Kain, together with Mary Detheridge, all from Superbowl making it into the Final to play Tom Rogers, Ron Jones and Trevor Burgin of Lauro BC.

A very exciting final saw the Lauro team prevail by 16 points to 15 after an extra end shoot out. Tom and Trevor are regular winners on the circuit but Ron said that it was his first open win in a number of years so all credit to him.The Gents Singles were contested by 38 players with some overseas visitors flying in especially for the event, which is gratifying for the host club. Sponsors for this event were Avalon Funeral Plans. Again close fought matches were the order of the day with Brian Todd halting a possible clean sweep of the Tournament for Tom Rogers by beating him at the Quarter Final early on the last day. Brian came from well behind to win the last eight ends and take the match 21 to 17.

In the Semi Finals Brian was beaten by John Peace also from Belplaya who was having a very successful week having already put out several of his own teammates in the opening rounds. The other Semi Final was a battle between Benalmadena entrants Juan Abeal and John Buckle who was last years Champion. Although a relative newcomer to the sport Juan is rapidly improving and managed to spring a surprise and defeat John to reach the Final.

This again was exiting to the end with John Pearce winning out to cap a great week for him. Juan also had a very successful week and is one to watch for future honours. The Ladies Singles saw 15 entrants battle the elements with 2 Belplaya ladies, Pauline Ball and Mary Moynihan playing Superbowl teammates Ilona Ott and Margaret Kain in respective Semi Finals.

Again we had close matches worthy of the occasion with Pauline just losing out to Ilona and Margaret winning a ding dong battle with Mary. This led to an all Superbowl Final with much rousing support from fellow Superbowl ladies players there for the occasion. Despite some excellent bowling from pre tournament favourite Margaret, Ilona managed to come out winner in the end to record her first Open win. Again one to watch out for in future events.Contestants and spectators were kept up to date by Dave Mainwaring’s excellent computer results system which was widely acclaimed.

Event photographs and details are courtesy of Mike Pritchard and will be available on our Bowls Club website … benalmadenabowlsclub.com. Many thanks to the markers and umpires who officiated throughout the event and to Sue Pritchard, Carol and Phil Hall, Heather Mainwaring and their helpers who kept everyone fed and watered! throughout.

The event ended with the prize giving and super buffet provided by Sue’s team for the players and spectators who had managed to see out a long final day. Greg Ellwood, Competitions Secretary, Benalmadena Bowls Club
