PILAR DE LA HORADADA REMEMBERS VICTIMS OF TERRORISM

This week saw the eleventh anniversary of the 2004 terrorist attacks in Madrid, when 192 people were killed and thousands still bear the scars of a tragedy that rocked the world.

In Pilar de la Horadada, the memorably named plaza Víctimas del Terrorismo saw a concentration gather to mark the tragedy, by holding a minute´s silence in memory of those affected by the attack.

The Mayor, José Fidel Ros, said, “Having a plaza named in honour of the victims of terrorism is nothing more than a sad reality that reminds us, not only today March 11, but every day, the pain and tragedy caused in our democracy by terrorist acts.”

Carlos Ruiz, a neighbour of Pilar also spoke, saying, “the only mistake that many of the 900 victims of ETA was to love Spain and desire peace. My only hope is to actually have peace and the terrorists responsible are in jail. For them, and because in Spain we need memory, dignity and justice, we meet here today.”

The members of the municipal government, members of local police and some residents attended the minute of silence after which a wreath in memory of the victims was placed “with the same objective of each year, to remember every one of the people who lost their lives and call through our minute of silence in which the values that should be our way of life: freedom, equality, justice, political pluralism and democracy, are not lost to the violence a few”, concluded the Mayor Ros.
