IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP. MARCH 2015

Just Try it! MYAKKA PINES Golf Course in Florida is built on open swampland near the Everglades, prime alligator country. “This gator is about 13 ft long,” the secretary said. “When they’re sunning themselves on the greens you just have to play through. We advise patrons not to feed them.” Oh really?

RAE’S CREEK flows behind the 11th green and in front of the 12th green at Augusta National, in what is known as Amen Corner. The creek is named after Irish landowner John Rae, who built a fortress home there in 1734. Rae’s house was the farthest up the Savannah River from Fort Augusta, and neighbours would use it as a safe haven during Indian attacks.

The brook alongside the 13th fairway joins Rae’s Creek by the 12th green, falling over a weir beyond the 11th green. Many a golf ball has rolled down the 12th green and into the water here, the lowest point on the course and 160ft below the first tee. Those in the know say Rae’s Creek tugs silently at every putt on the course.

NICE TO SEE Padraig Harrington atop the Leader Board again, winning the Honda Classic in a playoff for his first Tour victory since the 2008 PGA Championship. In 2014 he failed to keep full status on the PGA Tour for the first time, and he wrote letters to tournaments asking for a sponsor exemption. Some responded within an hour of his request, giving exemptions to the Valspar Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Valero Texas Open and Shell Houston Open, before the Masters.

To those who advised him to return one of the exemptions so as not to be worn out before Augusta Padraig replied: “I won’t turn any down, if I have an invite, I’ll go. I appreciate it, and I owe a few people favours.” But first it was back to Ireland, for a celebratory Guinness.

J.B. HOLMES held a five shot lead entering the final round of the WGC Cadillac at Trump Doral, but lost the tournament by one shot to Dustin Johnson’s 9 under 69. Still, Holmes managed to finish one shot ahead of Bubba (Wonder if he said ‘Elementary my dear Watson!’) The new design of the Blue Monster was slated by many players as being too long and with ‘ridiculous’ greens. Johnson said it was ‘great’ (Well he would say that, wouldn’t he?)

ADAM SCOTT has reverted to the short putter and tied 4th with a 2 under 70 at Doral. World No. 5 Adam said of the switch: “For guys who had never putted any other way, changing over would probably be a different story, but I’ve been successful with the short putter before, so this may be good for me.” Scott had become so frustrated with his putting that he took to the long putter in February 2011. He finished runner up to Els at the 2012 Open, won the 2013 Masters and last year briefly went to World No. 1.

A TIP to make practice less boring. After warming up imagine you are playing each hole of your next round. This will use all the clubs in the bag and prepare you for your next game in a more useful way. (If it’s La Serena imagine a ball retriever as well.)

LEE TREVINO, a friend of Tom Watson, commented on the U.S. teams’ criticism after the Ryder Cup. “I was really angry,” he said, “Tom worked his butt off for two years and all they did was show up and play. Anyway, criticism doesn’t sound good from a guy who has been on so many losing teams. If I had a losing record in the Ryder Cup, I’d keep my mouth shut.” That’s blown his Christmas card from Mickelson.

Until next time: Happy Golfing.
