A total of eight people have lost their lives on the roads of Spain this weekend, in the provisional count between 15:00 on Friday and 20:00 on Sunday, three of them motorcyclists and one a pedestrian.

Saturday was the worst day of the weekend with four fatal incidents, resulting in two motorcyclists being killed in near Elche and Las Palmas, a pedestrian in Guipúzcoa and a vehicle occupant in Pontevedra.

A 44 year old man died in an incident involving a car and a motorbike on the A-7 motorway near to Elche on Saturday, with emergency services attending the scene but unable to revive the rider.

In Las Palmas, the emergency services received notice that the motorcyclist had collided with a car and landed in a ravine near the town of Guriete. Despite managing to find and recue the rider, emergency services could only confirm the death.

Sunday saw three fatal crashes in Toledo, Tenerife and Tarragona where an occupant in the rear seat of a vehicle was killed in a crash.

The victim of the Tenerife crash was a man in his 70´s whose vehicle plunged off a bridge near San Antonio. Meanwhile, four young girls had a lucky escape when their car collided with another in Playa del Inglés on the island of Gran Canaria. Their vehicle overturned but the girls suffered only minor injuries, according to rescuers at the scene.

On Friday a motorcyclist was killed in Segovia.

Prior to the count of this weekend, an off duty Guardia Civil officer was praised for rescuing a woman from her burning car on the hard shoulder of the CV-40 near to Aielo de Malferit on Thursday. The officer was driving towards Ontinyent and spotted the BMW M5 in flames and so went to the vehicle, only to see the woman trapped inside. The officer carried out the daring rescue and stayed with the woman until fire fighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.
