The new Chief Judge of Torrevieja, Mariano José Gómez Lozano, has demanded action to put an end to the state of “collapse” that the courts in the town are experiencing, urging the urgent launch of new courts to deal with the backlog of cases.

Gómez Lozano has made the urgent request having been appointed to the post of Chief Judge in March, noting that a Royal Decree from June 2010 orders the implementation of two new courts, and yet no action has yet been taken to do so.

The Judge also states that there are “no plans” in place for the establishing of the courts, despite him seeing “no reason” why they cannot be implemented.
Torrevieja courts are suffering an “immense overload” according to the Judge, which “far exceeds” the workload established by the General Council of the Judiciary.

The court of the First Instance is currently operating at 245% above the standard set by the council, whereas the criminal court is operating at 167% above the standard module.
