The Department of Health has given the green light to the new childhood immunization schedule, as published last week in the new calendario de vacunación infantil
As a result, all girls aged 12 to 13 are now being offered HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccination as part of the childhood vaccination programme. The vaccine protects against cervical cancer.
Because of the sheer numbers of girls involved and to ensure adequate vaccination coverage, the vaccine is currently being given to girls who were born in 2001 and 2002. Next year the programme will be extended to include girls born in 2003 and 2004.
The HPV vaccine consists of two injections into the upper arm spaced at least six, and not more than 24 months apart.
