PODEMOS STILL EDGE POLLS WITH RULING PP TRAILING THIRD

Pablo Iglesias, leader of Spain's Podemos (We Can) party, poses with candidates for the upcoming regional elections in Madrid, April 9, 2015.

In an opinion poll conducted by Metroscopia just last week, for the fourth month running, Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos (“We Can”) held a narrow lead over the country’s two mainstream parties, the ruling Partido Popular and the opposition Socialist party, PSOE.

As such, if a General Election were to be held now Podemos would win by a narrow majority even though the poll shows that it has lost some support in recent months.

Podemos took five seats in elections for the European Parliament last May, just a few weeks after its formation, showing just how the austerity-weary Spaniards were turning away from the main establishment parties.

The next Municipal elections are due in just 5 weeks time with the next national election expected to take place towards the end of this year.

At a political rally last week Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stressed that the economic turnaround has made the Spain economy one of the fastest growing economies in the euro zone. However many still feel that it has yet to filter down with nearly one in four of working-age people remaining without a job.
