With just 5 games of the season remaining the Salineros really need to pick up the pace if they want to enhance their chances of reaching the promotion positions.

Realistically there is just one playoff place left, that currently occupied by local rivals CD Orihuela, and even that might just be a game or so too far, still 6 points ahead of Torrevieja.

But despite being unbeaten in seven their form is not quite good enough, five of those results ending in draws. Nothing less than 3 pts was the message from manager Pedreño going into Sunday evening’s fixture with relegation threatened FC Jove Español.

And despite their lowly position the Sanvicenteros have had a couple of decent results themselves of late, including a well earned 3-1 home success against Cullera last weekend, so ‘pushovers’ they will certainly be not.

I don’t think that anybody in the crowd was expecting another home game ‘goal glut’. And as expected Jove certainly tried to make a game of it although for the major part of the first period it was Torry that dominated in most areas with a much more disciplined display. The first major opportunity fell to Brani who saw his fierce drive turned around the post by keeper Millan.

It was an excellent effort and the Jove keeper did well to turn it away. On 25 minutes it was the head of Carrasco that went close but again Millan was equal to the Torry veteran’s attempt. Jorge was unlucky when his effort hit the bar on 35 minutes but then the crowd were in raptures when the next attack of the game brought the Torry goal. And it was an excellent build up that did the job bringing the very best as the home side moved the ball through just about every player, from back to front.

The result was a little scrappy as the ball deflected into the net off the head of Rafa Gomez, but they all count and the lead was no more than Torry deserved for their open and exciting play. Unfortunately with a goal in the bank the second period saw Torry go off the boil as Jove came much more into the game. Obviously needing the points for reasons of their own the visitors began to take the game to their hosts although without providing too many problems for Oscar in the Torry goal.

Indeed it took fully 30 minutes before their first real effort of the game but Oscar once again proved his worth when he saved well from Callero’s shot. Unfortunately the one blot on an otherwise professional display came on 35 minutes when Brani saw red for a foul outside the box on Adrian. Fortunately the resulting effort from Javo sailed harmlessly over the bar.

With Orihuela beating Ribarroja 1-0 as we went to press the win has done little for Torry other than keep them on the leaders tails. Still 6 pts from those playoff positions the games are sadly running out. Next weekend Torry face a difficult trip to Novelda but the new found confidence they are currently enjoying under Pedreño is surely worth a goal start.
