APA Playas Orihuela Costa, the group who are calling for a brick built school to replace the portable cabin horror that is currently accommodating the area’s junior school children, have once more taken up arms against the Orihuela Council.

This time they are challenging the government to reduce the prices of leisure activities charged in the privately managed CDM Orihuela Costa, the Municipal sports centre located in Playa Flamenca.

They say that it is completely unfair that the 1500 children resident on the coast are charged far more to use their local centre than is currently the case for children who join similar clubs or use comparable facilities in Orihuela City, Torrevieja or Pilar de la Horadada.

The group have made comparisons with the Palacio del Agua de Orihuela, CMD Pilar de la Horadada and the Centro Deportivo de Torrevieja. They say the disparity in charges is unacceptable and that they discriminate against everybody wishing to pursue a healthy lifestyle on the Orihuela Costa.

They say that it is now almost impossible for many people to use the facilities at CDM Orihuela Costa because of the high prices and that the price difference with sports centres in the nearby towns is absolutely disgusting.

Prices are such that many parents are transporting their children to Torrevieja and to Pilar de la Horadada because, even including the cost of transport and fuel 2 or 3 times a week, the cost of such facilities in neighbouring facilities are much cheaper.

Unfortunately there are many families however that don’t have the financial means, either to take their children elsewhere or to pay the local prices so they are made to suffer because they are unable to attend the same clubs or activities as their friends and school colleagues. APA Playas Orihuela Costa suggests that this could be up to 35% of all the children resident in the coastal area.

These shortcomings of public infrastructure on the coast are a major deficiency in the development of local children. And they also affect many adults of course, many of whom are elderly, who pay their local taxes and who subsequently have the right themselves to enjoy a healthy lifestyle by using local sports facilities without being ‘ripped off’.

Indeed by inflating the prices to levels that many people can’t afford, the management of CDM Orihuela Costa are forcing potential users elsewhere.

Common sense would suggest that if they brought the prices down to more manageable levels they would, of course, attract many of them back into the local facility and in so doing they would also strengthen all of the neighbourhood activities, clubs and teams.
