GREG HARLOW CRUISE TOUR VISITS MIRAFLORES BC.

On St George’s Day, 2015, Miraflores Bowls Club were delighted to welcome a visiting team led by former World Champion Greg Harlow, member of Team Henselite.

Greg’s CV of lawn bowling achievements during recent years is extensive & impressive. If you are a golfer, it would be equivalent to Rory McIlroy visiting your local golf club.

The group was unique in that they were part of a No Fly Cruising holiday organised by Potters Leisure on the 4* Fred Olsen cruise, which was calling at Malaga as one of only 3 ports of call where the bowlers would play against local opposition.

In the morning session, your author was drawn, along with Pam Kinane, Sheila McGurk & Denise Porter against Greg’s four. The prospect of skipping against bowling “royalty” was both exciting and daunting. I must confess I used the occasion to quiz Greg on many subjects and the response was very frankly expressed and informative – let’s face it how often do you get the chance to get a master bowler to yourself for an hour & a half?

Our four excelled the first half of the game with a 7 to 1 shot lead, but in the second half, as Greg began to adapt to the weight & line, we failed to score, losing a respectable12-7 shots.

In the afternoon, Greg’s four came up against strong opposition in the form of Craig & Sandra Lewis, Jeff Turner & Andy Salmon, who after a very tight game won by 13 shots to 12.

Of course in general the bowling took second place to hosting a great bunch of visitors from the UK, lead by a world class bowler and great character.

At the presentation the overall scores were read out in Swahili, which is not my favourite language, but in English, Greg thanked Miraflores BC members for their hospitality, especially Craig & Sandra Lewis and their supporting staff and presented an attractive picture of the tour ship.. In turn, Craig thanked Greg for bringing his individual skills & a great group of visitors from the UK, to Miraflores BC.
