Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has done it again: for the third time in succession, they have become barbershop champions of Spain, gaining their third gold medal. Led by Musical Director, Gail Grainger, the chorus travelled to Benalmádena, Málaga to compete on Saturday, 18 April.

Spangles first won gold in San Pedro del Pinatar in 2011, then again in Benalmádena in 2013. Choruses are not allowed to compete in the year following a win, so their next chance of a medal was at this year’s convention, organised by the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS).

“We are all delighted with our third championship win and I am especially proud of the chorus, because this was my last assignment as Musical Director of Spangles and they pulled out all of the stops” said Gail, who returns to live in the UK in May. “I couldn’t have wished for a better farewell”.

Gail joined the chorus as Assistant Musical Director in January 2008 and took over the role of Musical Director in September the same year. Since then, she and her management team have worked tirelessly to ensure that the chorus continues to improve and move forward. Starting in 2004 with just five ladies, the chorus now boasts more than 40 members and continues to grow.

The past year’s hard work paid dividends in Benalmádena, with Spangles sweeping the board, not only winning the contest, but scooping up the trophies for highest scores in singing, presentation and music.

“This couldn’t have been achieved without the specialist coaching we received and the dedication of each and every member of the chorus to achieve excellence” commented Gail, who hands over her baton to two joint chorus directors, Dawn Ritch and Wendy Grant, who will be supported by the Assistant Musical Director, Liz Lewis. “I know that I am leaving the chorus in good hands and I look forward to watching their continued progress from afar.”

Spangles welcomes new members so, if you’re looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit Spangles when they rehearse at Las Claras? They meet every Thursday from 10.00am to 1.00pm.
