Formula 1 racing champion Fernando Alonso has put his name to an alcohol awareness campaign, saying “If you drive, do not drink”.
The motor racing driver has collaborated in an anti drink driving campaign once before, during the 2007 season when he drove for McLaren.
On Tuesday of this week, Alonso presented the latest campaign in Barcelona, urging everybody to join the pact under the title “Únete al Pacto”.
The aim of the campaign message is to raise awareness globally on the incompatibility of alcohol and driving, which is sponsored and supported by the British multinational alcohol manufacturer, Diageo, the company behind such famous alcohol brands as Johnnie Walker, Bailey´s and Guinness, amongst many others.
Alonso´s team mates with McLaren-Honda, Mika Häkkinen and Jenson Button, are also behind the campaign, offering their support in encouraging zero consumption for drivers.
A website has been set up where you too can “join the pact”, and share the some of the emotion of driving that these champions support, which is at www.unete-alpacto.es. A hashtag has also been set up for use on social networks sites, which is #únetealpacto.
To date, Diageo has obtained nearly 1.5 million supporters around the world for this initiative which began in 2006. In Spain, the company has implemented specific actions aimed at young drivers explaining the incompatibility of alcohol and driving.
