WORLD RANKINGS FOR U3A DENIA CHESS PLAYERS

Two members of U3A Denia, Robert Simpson and Graeme Campbell, have both achieved one of their ‘Bucket List’ challenges – to have FIDE, the worldwide International Chess Federation, assess and rate their playing abilities and to rank them accordingly.

This three year process has required them to play over seventy games within official FIDE chess tournaments throughout Valencia Region, including an International one involving players from several European countries.

Each match has needed three hours of the utmost concentration against already rated players of varying ages and abilities, in order to be assessed for their own ratings. During those matches there were several highs when playing against fellow veterans. The lows came when playing against very highly ranked players, still at primary school!

The good news came through at the beginning of May, with Robert ranked as the number 106,994th best player in the World, Graeme ranked as number 106,604. “A bit like my schools reports – opportunities for improvement!”

Graeme was heard to say over a glass of celebratory bubbles. “However the whole process has been very uplifting and makes one realise that, despite advancing years, it is still possible to make new challenges happen”.
