The prosecutor in the courts of Jaén has asked for a prison sentence of four years be handed down to a 27 year old driver, named as José Luis P.L., who knocked down and killed a cyclist and seriously injured another.
The incident occurred in June, 2012, during the Vuelta Ciclista a Sierra Mágina, when the driver ignored calls to stop whilst the organized race was on the road where he was travelling.
The vehicle then carried on along the N-324 road, through a series of curves, travelling at speeds in excess of 60 kilometres per hour.
The vehicle crashed into the two lead cyclists. One of them, 17 year old José María Sánchez Raya, died in hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the impact. The second, Antonio David YM, who was 16 years of age at the time, was seriously injured and took 436 days to recover.
José Luis P.L. is charged with reckless homicide and causing injury by gross negligence and is facing two and a half years in prison for causing the death and an additional eighteen months for causing injury. In addition, the prosecutor is asking for 130,000 euro compensation be paid to the family of the dead cyclist, and 84,000 euro for the injuries.
