Local expat charities are working hard to support both British and Spanish nationals, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris saw in a day-long visit to the north of Alicante province this week.

Mrs Morris spent a morning in the HELP centres in La Xara, and was impressed to see the work that the charity is doing to deliver respite and residential care for those in need.

In addition to the work that they do to help British citizens, HELP Marina Alta and other charities also fundraise for their local communities so that all nationalities can benefit. Recently, for example, HELP purchased hospital beds for local GP surgeries and provided funds to Fontilles care home.

Mrs Morris said: “The work that these charities carry out is really fantastic. Not only are HELP Marina Alta supporting British nationals who need help, they are also fundraising for Spanish charities, such as the Fontilles care home. This is partnership in action – Brits supporting each other and also giving something back to the local Spanish community.”

She added: “As always, all the local charities are crying out for volunteers, so I would really encourage anyone who has some spare time to get involved. It can be incredibly rewarding work to help others.”

The Consul spent the rest of the day in the north of Alicante carrying out two focus groups, in Javea and Moraira. Britons attending the groups asked Mrs Morris to provide clearer and more up-to-date information on official websites.

She encouraged British residents to follow the Consulate on Facebook (www.facebook/BritsLivingInSpain) and to look at www.gov.uk/living-in-spain when they have a question about common issues such as driving licences, residency and the padrón.
