Recycle More Calls
Torrevieja town hall launched an initiative to encourage more recycling, after figures revealed that each inhabitant only recycles 4.53 kilos of waste, almost half the average across Valencia, where the figure is 8 kilos per inhabitant.
Municipalities receive money for recycled materials, whereas they have to pay for disposing of residual waste, therefore, the more that can be recycled, the lower the overall bill and the better it is for the environment.
Government spokesperson, Fanny Serrano, explained that in 2014, Torrevieja received 95,783 euro for plastics and cans, and 32,000 euro for carton and paper. The figures could triple if enough attention was given to separating materials. Torrevieja has 159,216 recycling bins, with more on order.
As part of the awareness campaign, the town hall has produced 34,000 brochures explaining the benefits and importance of recycling, and how to dispose of each item correctly.
