There were technical problems in so much as the rope to hold the flag to the mast had become damaged, so the flag was prevented from being affixed on the mast of the town hall, but the fact that it was the two most senior members of the government who took it upon themselves to fly the flag, the new mayor José Manuel Dolón and future Mayor, Fanny Serrano, was indicative of the change that Torrevieja is making within the community.

Torrevieja had been rocked by scandals in the past including a parade only last year where homophobic and hate related chants were allowed to be shouted from a parade through the city and the cancellation in 2010 of a concert by one of Spain´s most popular singers, Miguel Bosé, after homophobic comments were made by the then mayor, now convicted criminal Pedro Hernández Mateo.

International Gay Pride Day is held each year on the first Saturday before the 28th of June, a date firmly fixed in history as that of the infamous Stonewall riots in New York in 1969.
