The 1-1-2 emergency coordination centre received a call just after 15.00 explaining how an elderly man was unconscious in the water near to the Cabo Romano urbanisation.

Emergency medics and lifeguards were sent to the scene, but an off duty police officer, who had witnessed the incident from his balcony, was already retrieving and reviving the man until the medics took over, transferring him to the Santa Lucia hospital in Cartagena.

Meanwhile, earlier on Thursday, divers assisted lifeguards in rescuing a 54 year old Swedish national who had suffered a suspected heart attack whilst diving off the coast of Cabo de Palos. That call came in just before 10:00 in the morning warning that a dive boat was returning to port with the unconscious woman on board.

Two doctors were on board the boat and maintained her vital signs until she was able to be transferred to the same hospital´s intensive care unit for treatment.
