The Minister of Development, Francisco Bernabé, has invited a number of companies to participate in developing a new business plan, updating the figures from 2006, when it was calculated that the airport would transport 1.5 million passengers a year by 2015, doubling in a short time.

The Minister hopes to have the new economic study later this year, which would, according to his calculations, enable the contract to be signed by next summer, and so the airport should finally be able to operate by the end of 2016.

This would also result in the closure of San Javier airport, which is one of the few airports in Spain where passenger numbers are declining.
