Officers from the Guardia Civil have seized 90,000 euro in cash from a driver unable to account for the origin of the money after attempting to avoid a routine checkpoint.
The incident occurred at the weekend when the driver ignored instructions to stop his vehicle just off the A-70 motorway near El Campello, with one of the officers having to jump out of the path of the vehicle to avoid being struck.
The officers gave chase for around 20 kilometres as the driver attempted to evade capture, weaving through the traffic before being stopped by the officers.
During the subsequent inspection of the vehicle, officers located remains of a white powdery substance, a credit card on the dashboard, plus ecstasy pills in a plastic bag and 0.9 grams of speed. Inside a computer case they found 91,525 euro in mixed noted, the origin of which has not yet been established.
The detainee, a Spanish national, is accused of reckless driving offenses, serious disobedience and refusal to undergo alcohol and drugs tests.
