The Marine Salvage and Rescue service implemented a monitoring and inspection protocol on Tuesday after a container ship accidentally spilt fuel whilst passing through the sea strait between the Spanish mainland and Balearic Islands.
The Danish registered Nele Maersk, which was on its way to Genoa, radioed the Coast Guard that there had been an accidental spillage during a routine transfer between tanks.
A level 1 monitoring status was implemented by the Harbour Master at Barcelona and the authorities at Genoa have been advised of the incident.
