Four tourists were injured on Monday afternoon when the car they were travelling in left the N-332 main road and ended up in the salt lakes near Santa Pola.

The incident occurred at around 17:30 when the foreign driver of the vehicle, who had only just arrived in Spain on that day, said that he suddenly felt ill prior to losing control of the vehicle and swerving off the road, landing in the water near kilometre 83 heading in the Guardamar del Segura direction.

The tourists, who were described as elderly and with mobility problems, remained stuck in the salt until they could be rescued by the fire service who were quick to attend the scene along with medics and the Guardia Civil.

The vehicle occupants were uninjured, apart from a few minor cuts and bruises, but were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
