Divers from the Alicante regional fire and rescue service embarked on a deep immersion exercise in the waters off the island of Tabarca, recovering 70 kilograms of rubbish from the sea bed at the same time.
Eight fire fighters and two boats took part in the exercise, with the divers collecting everything from containers, cans, ropes and boxes, and even an information sign from the island.
As well as the obvious environmental benefits the activity has produced, the divers also found a two-handled pot and wooden parts believed to be from an ancient shipwreck. This find has been reported to the officials at Alicante for further investigation.
The rubbish items were put on display in the hope that showing the kind of rubbish sat on the sea bed might encourage more people to take their waste home and avoid polluting the sea.
