Orihuela Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana says that the Orihuela Costa has had a fair crack of the whip from the newly elected authority during July and August, despite criticisms that some parts of the area have been badly served especially in regard to road cleaning and waste removal. Flanked by coastal councillor Sofia Alvarez (on the left) and cleaning/waste disposal councillor Noelia Grao, Bascuñana said that ten extra police officers were drafted into the area over the summer ; there were improved bus services; improvements to some footpaths and better access to beaches. On the issue of rubbish disposal and the cleanliness of the area, Grao claimed that the authority had to work on tight budgets inherited from the previous administration with a loss of staff. She said that they had done everything possible to make sure that services had not been reduced to the public with more grass and garden cuttings removed up to end of July, compared to last year, and the number of beach cleaning patrols had also risen.
