August 2015 will be remembered as being the busiest ever month for Spain’s airports, with Alicante-Elche also recording a record-best figure. Nationally, just over 24 million passengers used the flight facilities across the country, which is nearly five percent more than the same month last year, with the airport at El Altet showing a four percent annual rise, clocking 1.26 million travellers. Domestic flights helped fuel the rises, whilst internationally, over 533 thousand UK travellers used Alicante-Elche airport, followed by Germany with 85 thousand, and Norway with 68 thousand. Over seven point two million passengers have gone through Alicante-Elche this year, with last year’s best figure of ten million travellers certain to be broken.
In contrast, passenger numbers are continuing to fall at San Javier airport, as nearly 156 thousand travellers used the facility in August which is a three point seven percent fall compared to August 2014, which in turn had recorded a big fall over the same month in 2013. Increased services from Alicante-Elche, and the on-going uncertainty over the date of San Javier’s closure in favour of the still-empty facility at Corvera are contributory factors to the reductions with air operators like Jet2 transferring next year’s summer schedule to El Altet.
