Torrevieja Town Hall has announced that the contract for providing beach rescue services in the town will be put to public tender, with the aim of improving the service.
The Cruz Roja had been the chosen provider in Torrevieja but the cost of providing the service had been increasing.
The town hall believe that by putting the work to public tender will mean that they can get more for their money, as the new contract will include additional requirements, such as extending the coverage time to be from 10:00 until 20:00, an hour longer at both the start and end of the day.
Although they will not be excluded from bidding, it is widely believed that the Cruz Roja will not be able to provide the level of service required within the financial constraints.
In summer, 2015, the life guards in Torrevieja were involved in 3,244 interventions in the sea, of which 290 were rescues, as well as 1,676 social assistances and 80 support cases.
