The government has increased the minimum wage in 2016 by just over 6 euro per month, from 648.60 to 655.08 euro, an increase of 1% and far below the 11% increase called for by some of the main trade unions, who were hoping to see an increase to 720 euro.

Spain is currently being run by a “caretaker” government until the fragmented results from the elections this month are resolved and coalitions formed.

The UGT and CCOO write to the government in November urging an 11% increase in 2016, plus a further 11% increase in 2017. That would ultimately put the minimum wage at 800 euro per month.

The minimum wage in the 28 EU countries in 2015 fluctuated between 1,923 euro per month in Luxembourg and 184 euro in Bulgaria, according to data from Eurostat, the EU statistical agency.
