Torrevieja Joins Home Rent Aid Scheme
Torrevieja town hall has announced the joining of a funding scheme which will allow grants to be used to help pay the rent of residents facing eviction in the town.
The Mayor, José Manuel Dolón, has reported that evictions for not paying rent are far higher in Torrevieja than those who have defaulted on their mortgage payment, but are equally vulnerable and at risk in the event of eviction.
The Regional Government of Valencia has allocated 2.2 million euro to the scheme across the entire region, and will assess cases on an individual basis through the local social services and welfare departments.
Torrevieja has been tagged as one of the poorest areas in the whole of Spain and so social funding is a necessary aid to help those unable to secure work in a town which has lost tens of thousands of foreign residents, and seen numerous businesses fall victim to the growth of centralised commercial outlets such as Habaneras and Zenia Boulevard.
