A 42-year old British resident of Orihuela was arrested by officers from the Guardia Civil after driving the wrong way along the AP-7 motorway and crashing into a vehicle driving in the correct direction.
The incident occurred last weekend when the vehicle driving in the Cartagena direction of the Alicante bound side of the motorway. The Guardia Civil had received a number of warnings over the vehicle and sped to the scene, but a collision had already occurred when they arrived at kilometre 4,700 of the CT-32 road.
The collision caused damage to both vehicles and minor injuries to the other occupant.
According to sources, the driver showed “obvious signs of impairment” and was therefore tested for alcohol and drugs, giving a positive result for cocaine and cannabis. He was arrested on suspicion of a crime against road safety, a crime of reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs, and was made available to the courts in Cartagena.
This week, another driver was arrested after driving for around two kilometres the wrong way on the road between Yecla with the Alicante town of Villena, in a location where two other drivers were stopped last August in the space of a 24-hour period.
