The High Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Orihuela town hall, which has confirmed that 1,740 homes at Cobo Roig are not entitled to personal delivery of their mail.

The case was lodged after the postal service set about reducing costs, which would mean that the homes in question would not have their mail delivered directly to the properties, but would have post delivered to a local, centralised location.

The National Markets Commission confirmed in May of 2014 that the site met two of the requirements and was perfect for the installation of community mail boxes to serve the homes.

In the midst of protests by residents over the threat of the loss of service, the previous government in the town hall filed the appeal on behalf of the residents, but that appeal has this week failed, and so the residents of Orihuela not only has to foot the bill for the case, those living in Cabo Roig will still lose their personal services.

The claim had focused around a breach of the rights of the residents, but despite the 1,740 homes facing a reduction in service, none of the 737 registered residents filed a complaint themselves.

The judgement also gave reference to Cabo Roig not being an isolated location, as it is part of a development set totalling 32,500 inhabitants which form a homogeneous whole. The post office itself is just 3.5 kilometres from Cabo Roig.
