In total, 210 of the 213 beaches that make up the Valencia coastline have received an “excellent” rating for water quality from the environment ministry.

The only three to let the side down are in Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada and Sueca, where the standard is “good” or “adequate” in the case of the latter.

In Torrevieja, Playa del Cura is in need of remedial work to make the grade, as is Calas de Rocamar in Pilar de la Horadada. As for Sueca, it is Mareny de Vilxes which is the worst beach in the area, only receiving the “adequate” rating.

Although it made the grade in the inspection, the quality of the water by another beach in Piar de la Horadada caused concern this week after a burst pipe caused raw sewage to spill onto the beach and the water.

Red flags and fences were erected after the incident on Thursday evening with the beaches reopening on Saturday once the spillage has dispersed and the water quality classed as “suitable for swimming”.
