Pink balloons literally went up over Zenia Boulevard on Sunday in a special annual balloon release organised by the cancer charity fundraisers, Maria and the Pink Ladies to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
A host of local entertainers gave their services free of charge as the day kicked off at noon, culminating in the release of balloons, with a card attached to each of them featuring a message to a loved one who may have lost their battle to cancer.
Money raised on the day also came from personal donations and a newly released CD recorded by local performers called Run for Life which has been adopted by the Pink Ladies as their new anthem. To date, the fundraisers have accumulated nearly 300 thousand euros for the AECC cancer charity, with the money used to buy machines for the early detection of cancer, as well as bringing down the cost of cancer testing.
