Low-cost filling stations with minimal staffing are booming in Alicante Province, according to figures from the Federación Mediterránea de Estaciones de Servicio, who say there are 300 such stations in the area, putting it alongside Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia in terms of growth. Torrevieja has seen six low-cost outlets opening over the last year, like the Gas Express station at San Luis.

The Federación has criticised that some stations are breaking Valencian government laws over staffing, with the group claiming that a number have been open during the day without anybody present. Another group, la Asociación Provincial de Gasolineras, has branded the low-cost stations as unfair competition.
