In a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and French authorities, the suspected leader of terrorist group ETA, Mikel Irastorza, has been arrested.
The news was posted on the Spanish Interior Minister´s Twitter feed at 07:50 on Saturday morning, which stated, “#ÚLTIMAHORA | Detenido en #Francia Mikel Irastorza, el máximo dirigente de #ETA en una operación de la @guardiacivil”. The ministry later reported the details in full.
The arrest was made in the French town of Gala de Ascain, close to the Spanish border. The operation is ongoing and the authorities have not ruled out more arrests in the next few hours.
ETA has been responsible for hundreds of deaths over a 45 year period, including almost 500 members of the security services and almost 400 civilians.
