Callosa de Segura council has taken over cleaning and rubbish collection services in the town after scrapping its deal with the Sirem company, after they claimed that it had breached its contract in a number of ways. The council had given notice a few weeks ago that it was terminating its relationship with Sirem, and a row ensued over two sweeping vehicles, that the local police said were not in a roadworthy condition and were running without the latest ITV certificates.
Sirem in turn says that the authority owes them around two and a half million euro, with a legal battle looking like a strong possibility. The council has hired equipment and workers to maintain a service for a transitional period ahead of a more formal arrangement to run a municipal-based collection and cleaning operation.
