Torrevieja’s Teatro Municipal will open “as soon as possible”, according to Councillor José Hurtado, after it was shut down 18 months ago over safety concerns. Despite hopeful predictions from the council that the facility would reopen last summer, nothing happened as a dispute ensued with the architect, in addition to claims that the auditorium had been functioning without an appropriate license.
Now Councillor Hurtado has said that the Torrevieja government team had approved a budget of 40,000 euro for safety work on the theatre’s staircase, and that once the work had been completed, the building will reopen. Hurtado blamed the delays on “bureaucratic and technical issues”.
Eighteen months ago the council said that basic licensing and safety work needed to be carried out, which it claimed the previous Partido Popular administration failed to do. The authority said the theatre was opened eleven years ago without any final completion certification. In April 2016, the council said that it was looking to reopen the complex in June, but at that time, the original architect had still to sign appropriate papers for improvements to be made to the facility.
