The National Police have arrested 61 Georgian mafia members specialising in house burglaries, with a faction operating in Alicante Province. The operation was carried out over the span of several months with the help of Europol, and the French and Georgian police.
The criminal organisation consisted of nine groups operating in Madrid, with links to Malaga, Sevilla, Sabadell, Barcelona, and Bilbao, as well as Alicante. Most of the arrested were Georgian nationals, along with eight Spanish nationals.
An increase of house burglaries led the police to open an investigation at the start of 2016, which resulted in operation “Aikon I”, where nearly 50 suspects were arrested. However, the illicit activity continued, prompting the police to launch operation “Aikon II”, when more arrests were made. Police also searched 26 houses, where they seized cash, vehicles, tobacco, jewellery as well as picks and false keys used for burglaries.
