Elche council says that they are willing to sacrifice a “Blue Flag” award at one of their local beaches if residents want to see a dog beach set up. Tourism councillor Mireia Mollà has said the authority are keeping all options open as to where such a facility would be set up along the nine kilometres of coast in the municipality.
A previous plan for a dog beach at El Pinet in La Marina was dropped amidst controversy that the residents were not even consulted. Mollà says that she has an open mind on the location, but that residents have to be fully involved. She also plans to go with council officials to check out the dog beach that neighbouring Alicante council have set up at El Campello.
No time scale has been in put in place, with Mollà stating that getting things right was important, as opposed to getting something open in time for this summer.
