The Guardia Civil arrested an 86-year-old British man, Ronald Stenning, on suspicion of killing his wife at a retirement home in El Campello, north-east of Alicante City. The incident happened at around 9.00 am on Sunday, with his 79-year-old wife Margaret having her throat slashed, whilst Mr. Stenning then allegedly tried to harm himself with the same knife.
He was taken to San Juan University Hospital in Alicante with what were initially described as superficial injuries, but he then needed emergency surgery. He was said to be “out of danger and conscious” on Monday morning.
The drama unfolded at the Orbea Buenavista residential home in the Muchavista beach area of El Campello, with a worker at the facility saying that the Stennings had not lived there long. A Guardia Civil spokesman said that “they were investigating the death of a woman aged 79 who was allegedly attacked by her 86-year-old husband with a bladed weapon.”
Staff at the home said the couple had never previously been involved in any violent incidents and the woman had never reported her husband for abuse.
A minute’s silence in memory of Margaret Stenning took place on Monday lunchtime outside the regional government building in Valencia City. Valencian vice-president, Monica Oltra, described it as a “new example of male violence which had ended Margaret’s life”.
