Increased international tourism with big rises for Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports helped to fuel a five percent hike in air passenger numbers for February. Nearly 14 million people used Spain’s airports last month, a five point one percent increase on February 2016, with Alicante-Elche’s figures standing at 687 thousand, up by nearly 13 percent over a year.
More services at San Javier airport saw a massive percentage rise in numbers of over 91 percent compared to a year earlier, with 37 thousand passengers using the facility. The resurgence at the airport has been led by a number of companies launching winter flight services despite the continuing uncertainty over the timetable for the move to the new international airport at Corvera.
