The arrest was made in a bank branch in San Mateo, after the son of the victim reported that his father had been bundled into a car by two people.

The police launched a search, also alerting the local taxi drivers to be on the lookout, and quickly located a vehicle and occupants matching the description of that given by the son, near to the bank building.

As the officers entered the branch they located the victim accompanied by a male matching the description of one of the kidnappers. The victim then reported to the police that he had been kidnapped and threatened with death unless the ransom of 150,000 euro was released from the bank.

The police arrested the suspect, and a second man also believed to be involved. The two detainees, said to be of Belgian nationality, claim that their actions were as a result of their business becoming bankrupt and will now appear before the courts facing charges of kidnapping, threats and aggravated assault.
