Local residents had alerted the police to a number of incidents in the area where vehicles had suffered scratch damage to the sides and bonnet.

Officers set up surveillance and were surprised to observe the elderly man scratching a vehicle.

The pensioner, realising he had been discovered, threw the object that he was using to scratch the vehicles away. The object was identified as a carpenter´s pick, a tool of his trade until he retired.

The man, a resident of the neighbourhood and of Spanish nationality, is accused of at least 19 crimes of causing damage which together account for about 10,000 euro, with other complaints from neighbours in the area likely to be taken into consideration.
